What is an aphorism? An aphorism is a a pithy observation that contains a general truth. Ben's aphorisms in Poor Richard's Almanac give kind of a life lesson summed up in one poetic style sentence. Some of the aphorisms are: No gains without pains; A small leak will sink a great ship; Well done is better than well said.

The First aphorism no gains without pains which means that with great accomplishments can come great pain. This pain may come in the form of debt, mental scaring, or physical pain. Take for example if you started your own business you may start out in debt. Or if your in the army if your taking a valuable position it may come with physical and mental scaring especially if the enemy is dug in on that position. One of the virtues that goes with this is industry.
The second aphorism A small leak will sink a great ship means that if you make a small mistake you can cause accident catastrophic. To give a medical example in the nursing occupation if your one tiny molecule off in your measurements you can kill your patient. A virtue that goes with this one would be resolution.
The last aphorism Well done is better than well said means that actions speak louder than words such as doing something is better than talking about it. As an example in construction if you do something that needs to be done rather than talk about doing it you can get the job done faster and get paid faster. The virtue that would best match with this one would be the one of silence.
